About IMéRA

IMéRA is the Institute for Advanced Study of Aix-Marseille University and a member of RFIEA (French Network of Institutes for Advanced Study), NETIAS (Network of European Institutes for Advanced Study) and UBIAS (University-Based Institutes for  Advanced Studies).

Each year it hosts about thirty artists and scientists from all disciplines (residents), selected after an evaluation procedure with the most stringent international standards, shortlisting of applications and external evaluators.

IMéRA promotes innovative experimental interdisciplinary approaches in all areas of knowledge. Since September 2016, the research activity within the institute has hinged around four thematic programmes: Art, Science and Society; Crossing paths: explorations of interdisciplinarity; Mediterranean programme; Global Phenomena and Regulation.

IMéRA was incorporated into Aix-Marseille University (AMU) in 2013. This has opened the Institute up to a wide array of top-level interactions, notably with AMU Institutes and graduates schools, while naturally preserving IMéRA’s scientific independence.

Since 2016-2017, IMéRA has maintained an upward trajectory in terms of the quality of incubated scientific or cultural projects. This has been made possible in particular by the multiplication of pluriannual partnerships with scientific, cultural and institutional partners of very high level and at all scales, ranging from the Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) and the Ecole des Hautes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) to the French-American Fulbright Commission and the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), notably through Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée (Mucem). These partnerships have resulted in the creation of numerous thematic chairs annually held by first-class researchers from the world's leading universities and research institutes. In just a few years, IMéRA has established itself as a leading Institute for Advanced Study in France, and has markedly increased its visibility worldwide. As a matter of fact, IMéRA is currently one of the three coordinators of the network UBIAS.
